Travel trailer or fifth wheel

Travel trailer vs fifth wheel for northern Alberta

How bumper-pull travel trailers and fifth wheels compare on hitching, stability, space, truck requirements and Alberta's towing rules, using Keystone, Forest River and Government of Alberta sources.

The short version

  • A travel trailer hitches to a ball behind the bumper. A fifth wheel hitches to a kingpin plate in the truck's box, so you need a pickup.
  • Keystone says a fifth wheel puts most of its weight over the tow vehicle's frame, which makes it more stable, and that fifth wheels have more space and more slideouts.
  • Fifth-wheel pin weights are much higher. Forest River's 2027 Wildcat fifth wheels list pin weights of 1,765 to 2,115 lb, while its Wildcat travel trailers list hitch weights of 359 to 945 lb.
  • In Alberta a fifth wheel doesn't need a second means of attachment, and only a fifth wheel can be the lead trailer when you tow two.
  • A regular Class 5 licence covers most RVs, as long as they don't have air brakes.

Picking between a travel trailer and a fifth wheel usually comes down to the truck you have, or the one you're willing to buy, and how much room you want at camp. Here's how they compare, using the manufacturers' own descriptions and Alberta's towing rules.

How they hitch

A travel trailer (or bumper-pull) connects to a ball on a receiver hitch behind the rear bumper. A fifth wheel has a raised front section that extends over the truck's box and connects to a kingpin hitch mounted in the box. A fifth wheel needs a pickup, while some lighter travel trailers can be towed by an SUV.

Those hitch and pin weights are Forest River's published figures for the trailer as built. Once you load it, the weight on your truck goes up. Our weight-matching guide shows how to estimate it.

What Alberta's towing rules say

  • Attachment. A trailer must be connected by two separate means, such as the hitch plus safety chains or cables. Under the province's 2026 RV Towing Guide, a fifth wheel doesn't need the second means of attachment.
  • Towing two trailers. This is only allowed when the lead trailer is a fifth wheel with at least two axles in tandem. The longer trailer must go first, and the whole combination can't be longer than 20 m.
  • Licence. Alberta says a regular Class 5 licence is all you need to drive most RVs, as long as the RV doesn't have air brakes.
  • Brakes. Heavier trailers need their own brakes. The towing guide sets out when, based on the trailer's weight and how it compares to the tow vehicle's.

Northern Alberta considerations

  • Cold-weather packages. Ask what's actually included, whatever the type. For example, Forest River's 2027 Wildcat Maxx travel trailer lists an enclosed underbelly, heated tank pads and a tankless water heater with freeze protection, with Canadian Z-240 certification as an option.
  • Winterizing. Both types need it. See our winterizing guide.
  • Storage. A fifth wheel's front overhang and height can limit where you park it. Measure your storage spot before you buy.

Bottom line

If you already own a half-ton or an SUV and want to keep the truck box free, a travel trailer that fits its ratings is the simpler choice. If you want more room and stability and you have, or will buy, a pickup rated for the pin weight, look at fifth wheels. Either way, start with the weight label, not the floorplan.
